The Family Series
The Family Series Project started in 1997. I went to my fathers high
school reunion and
was inspired to photograph the event. This lead into a photographic
essay of my family.
The images record my parents at their home in Campbell, California,
at a family gathering
at my sisters home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and on a family trip
to Jamaica.
My family is of mixed race, mixed educational levels, and mixed economic status,
however, none of
these categories are ever directly a topic of conversation. My family
is full of silences yet they
are living in a historical moment when there is a lot of noise about
race, class, and family
values. What is keep quiet in my family is no different to any other family.
My camera is a way to
open a discussion concerning the differences found in all families and how to accept
these differences.
I suspect that the issues and complexities in my family are part of a larger cultural phenomenon.
I see this connection as my primary focus of research
and investigation with this body of work.
